came up with the rebuttal address in 1966. and now since barack obama has been president, they have come up with a new idea. the idea of doing not just a rebuttal to the president's state of the union address, but also a rebuttal to their own rebuttal. what? yes. for the third year in a row now, republicans are rebutting themselves as well as rebutting the president. what could possibly go wrong? the first year was 2011 when minnesota congresswoman and eventual presidential candidate michele bachmann gave not the republican party response, but the tea party republican response to the republican response to president obama's state of the union while making meaningful eye contact with something other than the camera that was pointed at her. that was the first one. the year after that, the tea party republican response to the republican response to the state of the union was given by pizza company executive herman cain. >> and so i say in response on behalf of the tea party and citizens people across this country, with all due respect, mr. president, some of us are not stupid. the stat
groundwork kind stuff that democrats did for obama. yough karl rove is on the cutting edge of that. >> i totally agree with you on that. that was what plouffe and axelrod and those people did for obama and obama was state-of-the-art. what the obama people learned they learned ironically from the george w. campaign in 2004, plus howard dean, who really was a pioneer. i don't know where that pioneer -- that tactical pioneer is going to be on the republican side. >> well, that's the big question. who is the next leader when it comes to running big campaigns for the republicans? i just look -- i look at rove. anybody that can get somebody re-elected in the midst of an unpopular war is still going to be a player down the road somewhere. that's kind of how i view karl rove. i don't think he is done. i think he still has too many connections. >> i'll concede. ed, i will concede when i wrote the kicker to that piece and made that statement, you know, if you take that in isolation, it sounds pretty conclusive and final. i know karl viewed it that way. but i take your point. >> quickly, howa
not to pat ourselves on the back too much. not yet. tomorrow first lady michelle obama is returning to her hometown of chicago. she is returning to attend an event that should not even be taking place. she is returning to attend the funeral of a child killed by gun violence. 15-year-old hadiya pendleton was shot and killed in chicago on january 29th. she was huddled with a group of kids taking cover from a rainstorm after school when a gunman opened fire and shot hadiya in the back and killed her. hadiya was an honor student. she was a majorette. and in fact, she just performed at president obama's inauguration last month. and she was killed about a mile from the president's home on the south side of chicago. hadiya's story reminds us again that while the mass murder of children in newtown was an unspeakable horror, it is thankfully rare. and while the manhunt in los angeles is a terrifying spectacle, it too is rare. what gun violence is in this country is hadiya pendleton, a teenaged girl killed in her own neighborhood in chicago. we have some political will right now coalescing around gu
